Smile, it makes people nervous.

Вчера, случайно обнаружив, что на экраны уже вышел "Ender's Game", сходили с Н. в кино. Вышли очень вовремя, как раз, когда в дом заявилась первая группа любителей халявных конфет, хотя мы им и так дверь не собирались открывать. В кинотеатре было замечательно, пусто и тихо. Само кино было... я вернулась домой и тут же села перечитывать книжку. Книжка замечательная, очень советую, если вы случайно еще не читали. А для кино взяли книгу и выкинули из нее все мысли и чувства, оставив жвачку для глаз, да и та оказалась какой-то залежавшейся и безвкусной.

Ночью, по пути из Сан-Франциско в Нью-Йорк, обуреваемая бессонницей посмотрела кусочек Анны Карениной. Начало пропустила, потому что пыталась бороться с бессонницей путем закрывания глаз. За наушниками мне лезть было лень, поэтому смотрела без звука. Концептуальненькое кино получилось.

Решила все-таки добить свою "коллекцию" русских фильмов и посмотрела почти год назад записанного мамой "Статского советника". Год ждала, потому что у меня по жизни на русское кино идиосинкразия, приходится долго морально готовиться перед просмотром, ну и первая экранизация Акунина меня совсем в свое время не вдохновила. Но после "Волкодава" мне уже ничего было не страшно. "Статский советник" на мой взгляд лучшая из трех попыток. Хотя с голубоглазостью Фандорина по прежнему большая проблема и Маса вышел совершенно неубедительный. Основная актерская работа очень приличная, режиссер тоже неплохо сработал, костюмы и грим на уровне. Сценарий близок к тексту оригинала, что я всегда очень приветствую. Вот только почему они упорно переписывают концовку? Ладно в Гамбите это не важно, но в данном случае это совершенно меняет все написанное после. Т.е. в дальнейших экранизациях, если таковые будут иметь место, нужно либо игнорировать концовку Советника, либо заново переписывать все последующие события. Ерунда получается. В целом - неплохое кино.

Saw "X-men 3" yesterday. It was quite watchable if you suspend all higher brain functions for the duration of the movie and don't try to reflect on it afterward. As soon as analytical and judging abilities get restored, pain of incoherent storyline riddled with plot holes and coupled with unconvincing acting hits your system. As N. nicely summarized it: lame. I hope we won't get subjected to something like "The Last Stand after the Last Stand" or "The Last Stand Rebooted" in the future.

Finally saw an actual good real grown up movie this year, which, despite Roger Ebert's opinion of it, had not been a good year for movies. So far in 2005 I managed to see two children stories (barely passable Harry Potter and very nice Narnia) and missed Star Wars, so I was getting pretty desperate for a normal picture with a minimal number of children on screen and in the audience. Well, "Brokeback Mountain", which I've wanted to see ever since I heard Ang Lee was making it, met all of my requirements and then some. For starters, there were no children in the audience and we didn't even have to go to Chelsea for that. Secondly, the story was great, although I quite expected that, having read the short story on which the movie was based, and very faithful to the original, something I was worried about. The acting was also pretty good. I liked the casting job they did, even though neither of the guys matched the author's description. Jake Gyllenhaal was perhaps a touch too pretty for a cowboy, but Heath Ledger generally looks like an uncouth peasant, so he was right in his element. Lastly, luckily for me Lena came back just in time so I got to watch the movie in just the right company. And then she bought me dinner. Can't beat that.

The only complaint I had about the "Brokeback Mountain" was a horrible make-up job they did on the guys. I could have also done with fewer sheep and more love scenes but that really would be asking for too much.

I gave it some thought and came to the conclusion that I might have been too critical of the creators of the movie. I mean, they obviously sat themselves a very challenging task. Just imagine the effort required for hunting down all the clever and funny dialogs that were so inconveniently common in the book and getting rid of them. Could not have been easy, and yet, they managed commendably; I hardly detected any trace of them left. Then, they had to identify the small details that originally made the book so unique and not allow any of them to sneak into the final product. Another huge task that was accomplished quite admirably. And lastly, all the convoluted and warped sense and continuity of the original had to be replaced with the convoluted and warped lack of both, leaving us with a meaninglessly dull adventure, a love story, and a number of unfinished side plots which I sincerely hope the creators are not planning to expand on in the upcoming sequels.
