Smile, it makes people nervous.

I didn't think it was possible to develop something more horrible for book management than iTunes but clever developers at Apple squashed my pessimism and came up with iBooks. Since I have to turn in my company laptop I've been working on resurrecting my old MBP. As part of the the process I upgraded it to Mavericks which by default comes with iBooks. Once I ran out of invectives, a quick search yielded a way to wipe out the abomination of iBooks off my computer and to return control of my ebooks to iTunes.

Since I'll have to repeat the process in a couple of weeks, when my new laptop is scheduled to arrive, ( here are the instructions:  )

Google is taking on Microsoft. They just announced plans to have their own OS available by second half of 2010 and they are not talking about Android:

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Same as with Google Wave, it looks like they want to involve the open-source development community even before the product launch.

Got back my laptop. Nothing too major, just needed a new motherboard. Lessons learned: don't drop your superlight laptop on the hardwood floor, that's what the ToughBooks are for.

0.65 inch thick, 4lbs, 13-inch screen (1,366 x 768), 128 SSD, 4G DDR3 Adamo notebook. Due out March 26th. Looks pretty sleek. Downside (beside it being Dell): CPU is a bit on the low end and I absolutely hate those glass screens.

Looking for a new TV? How about this Sony Digital TV? Boasting OLED technology that produces 3mm thick screen, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (yes, that is a million to one), 11 inch diagonal and a $2,499.99 price tag.

And while we are on the topic of new technologies, I just bought myself a new toy (not with my own money, naturally) with an addition of retail Microsoft Office 2007, which came in a box specially designed for Vista and new Office.

I want to play with both. Even though I've got quite a few grumbles about ThinkPad X60, I would give X300 a shot for sure. And a Mac for N., who likes these utterly impractical pretty gadgets.

Купили мы давеча несколько интеловских серверов. И решила я сегодня установить на один из них ОС. Ubuntu, если кому принципиально. Ставлю, поставлю, а установить не могу. Доходит до "Booting kernel" и умирает. Молча. Даже не говорит, что его не устраивает. Поменяла сервер, таже фигня. Повторила попытку с Fedora Core. Сдалась и выкопала из загашника Windows Server 2003, который мне гордо доложил, что HDD в данной конструкции, которую я пытаюсь выдать за компьютер, а на самом деле наверное этажерка, не имеется. Тут меня настигло deja vu и я проверила RAID конфигурацию. RAID оказался в наличии, хотя я четко и понятно, на мой взгляд, при заказе раз пять повторила: NO RAID. Пришлось звонить в суппорт, где мне последовательно объяснили, что нет, совсем избавиться от RAID никак нельзя, что такое Ubuntu они не знают, но слово Linux где-то слышали, и что в процессе установки ОС у меня есть шанс установить драйвера для контроллера. С дискеты. Всю глубину моих ощущений в этот момент передать мог бы пожалуй только русский мат. Но я им не разговариваю. Так что незнакомый мне Ричард был лишен шанса пополнить свой словарный запас. Зато он узнал мое честное мнение об их серверах и драйверах, а заодно и что я думаю о Windows, просто для полноты картины.

Завтра мне пообещали выкопать дисковод, а пока я установила Red Hat Linux 5.0, который встал без второго слова и тем более без дисковода.

Я знаю, Ленка уже жаловалась, что у меня последнее время все про работу или про компьютеры, но...

В данный момент занимаемся инвентаризацией и выкидыванием (в прямом смысле) устаревшего оборудования. Среди всякого специфического мусора огромное количество старых компов и всяческой к ним периферии. Одних CRT мониторов уже 23 штуки набралось, плюс полная коробка PS/2 мышей и клавиатур. Перед выкидыванием старых компов вынимаем из них HDs. Этим занимаюсь я. Хорошо, что у меня есть опыт общения с Dell и меня уже не удивить дикими мерами предпринимаемыми создателями некоторых кейсов, чтобы предотвратить доступ к HD. На данный момент абсолютный лидер - Gateway, чтобы добраться до спрятанного драйва мне пришлось снять две боковушки, верх и перед кейса (да, они все отдельные были) и открутить восемь шурупов. Ругалась сильно.

Кстати, чтобы дать вам представление с чем я имею дело: один из компов был сборки 1991 года и вынутый из него HD был, hold on to your hats, ladies and gentlemen, 84MB!

А еще я в развалах нашла 5.25'' дискетки. Такая ностальгия пробила :)

An interesting article in the new IEEE Spectrum (which I shamelessly stole from the mail drop of one of my coworkers and read on the plane) about the Parakey, the new undertaking by Blake Ross of Firefox fame. To be more specific, the article is crap, but the idea is quite interesting. I'd like to see how it will work out. For an actually interesting, informative, and useful article read this.
