A friend pointed me to an interesting video series on YouTube "Privacy is dead - get over it", by Steve Rambam, PI. It's a recorded presentation that was broken into 5-minute-long chunks for your educational benefit. If you think anything you do can be done anonymously nowadays, you should watch this video. Incidentally, it mentions something about using IP addresses and search results as proofs in criminal law suits. Of course, I know that the big bad company that knows absolutely everything about you (where you are, what you are doing and who you are doing it with) is not amazon or google, as this guy claims, but your service provider.

I thought he was talking way too obvious things.

I finally got a chance to watch the whole thing and yes, it might be obvious if you stop and think about it but how many people really do give it a second thought? When you are presented with the reality in a nicely wrapped neat package it outstrips anything Orwell could have imagined.

I agree, but how ignorant should one be to not know most of what he's saying? It's like someone telling you that US consists of 52 states, here are their manes, here's their climate... One may not able to name all 52 but who would keep listening?

Uhm, somebody curious enough to know which two states in the opinion of the presenter got left off the flag and the coin collection?

Yeah, but what I mean is you should be looking for a very particular type of knowledge, and it makes more sense to look it up than to listen to the whole thing and then try to pick out what you need. It's like scraping scallion out of the dumplings when you need scallion.
