Music appreciation

I just discovered an astonishing thing about myself. avva posted a video of REM's "Losing my religion" which somebody doctored to play in major scale. I love that song so I listened to the video. Then I read people's comments how it sounds too upbeat. Then I listened to the original version. Then I first read the description of the differences between major and minor scales (didn't understand a word, naturally) and, second, found a couple of videos on YouTube where people illustrate the difference on various instruments. Then I gave up because I can't hear any difference whatsoever. I mean, we already established with Lena that I can't tell the difference between adjacent notes but up until this moment I didn't realize that was such a crucial thing. I think I know how color blind people feel.

у меня тоже такое чувство. Вернее, странное ощущение неуловимой разницы. Я слышу разницу в мелодии в некоторых переходах, но не воспринимаю ее как существенную для восприятия песни.

If that never bothered you so far why should it start bothering you at this point? I cannot imagine a situation in life where you would be harmed by failing to distinguish major from minor on hearing. It, probably, takes something from perception but so does inability to run at certain speed or ignorance of baseball rules. Whatever. If you already have music that you like or dislike, that means you have some significantly developed sense of music and you are not in any way musically-challenged.

Having said that, if you feel that you totally cannot go on without, I can when we meet show you a trick to distinguish which does not involve music hearing or knowledge in physics.

Doesn't bother me, but it might finally explain why I fall asleep at Philharmonic, and can't listen to music that doesn't have words with it, and why the only melody I can hum is a funeral march :)

Must me minor, least they would fail to recognize it
