Techy stuff

I have a ton of work to do and a million papers to read (and memorize), so I ... hacked my phone. Have been meaning to do that since I got this POS phone in July. Well, I obviously didn't get any work done but I can finally use USB to charge the phone (yeay, one fewer charger to drag around) and to upload/download stuff to it. The phone is still crap, though.

And while I am on a tech kick, here is a short list of some nifty gadgets I am itching to play with:

Squeezebox from Slim Devices: lets you stream music from a comp to your stereo via 802.11g wireless. According to a friend of mine who just tested it (purely for work, of course, though I haven't noticed any surround sound stereo systems lying around the labs ;) and says the sound is beautiful and the box is really easy to install and use. I think it's neat and was designed for people like me, who keep all their music on the hard drive, except, of course, I don't own a stereo.

MediaLounge™ Wireless HD Media Player from D-link: does something similar to the Squeezebox but with videos and pictures. Claims to support a whole slew of codec formats including HD and mpeg4. In addition to wireless has ethernet connection, and a USB. BTW, for those of you who live in private houses (as opposed to what we call 'multidwellings' and normal people call buildings), and might have Verizon FiOS service available in your area, I heard our advanced settop box can do something similar.

Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO): simply put it's a broadband wireless service that is always on, like DSL, eliminating the need for hotspots. It's a CDMA standard so the widest coverage right now is by VZ Wireless (BroadbandAccess and V CAST) and Sprint (don't know what they call it, though). It's supported by a bunch of phones (Q, Treo, some RAZRs, mine included, some LG VXs, etc.) There are a number of EVDO PCMCIA cards floating around, but laptops with a built-in EVDO are also coming out (ThinkPads and Dells for sure, more are most likely on the way).

Anybody ran into any cool and exciting new technology lately?
